For the last couple months, I have been trekking up to Gordo, Alabama’s Studio 150 to print. The studio, owned by Glenn House and Kathy Fetters, has lots of wood and metal type, as well as a nice selection of printing presses. The studio is situated next to Amos Kennedy’s print shop, and it is also the home of Artist-In-Residence, Jessica Peterson. Jessica and I became friends last year, and she has been gracious enough to open up her workspace for me, and guide me through an ambitious printing project. Thank you, Jessica!
I’ve letterpress printed many times during and after college, but I always had a master printer on-hand to walk me through the process of locking-up, mixing inks, fixing the impression and registration, etc. So the goal was that by the end of this project, I would be able to confidently and independently work the press. I think this mission has been accomplished!
So here is a sneak peek of the poster, as well as some process shots and a photo of me celebrating finally getting the registration right for the last run. It is a redesigned version of this Gumbo poster, which I made in 2010 for a GOOD contest. It has 7 colors and 10 print runs. It was created with hand-cut polymer, hand-set metal type, wood type, and photo polymer, and is printed on lovely Crane’s Lettra Letterpress paper.
Posters are for sale, and will be in my online shop soon!
