I have been thinking a lot lately about the power and dangers of infographics, and this video proves that I’m not the only one. I found myself getting commissions for infographics work after I participated in a fun personal exercise– the research and visualization of a choose-your-own-recipe for Gumbo. I’ve learned a lot through the process of designing these data visualizations, the first being that I am not a statistics master (revelatory!). Although I think the work I’ve done communicates the general messages clearly and beautifully, I realize they have not all been 100% mathematically accurate. The fact is that graphs can be deceiving, and the last thing I want to do is misinform. But being a novice in this specialization of design, mistakes happen. Anyway, the video is really interesting— you should watch it!
BBC television seems to have embraced informing people of the power (and dangers) of infographics. Several months before Hans Rosling’s television documentary “The Joy of Stats”, they even took up data visualization and infographics as a subject of intense debate. More specifically, on a episode ofNews Night, Information is Beautiful author David McCandless dueled with “Anti Design” initiatorNeville Brody, a “legendary designer who is the original art director of The Face”.
